My first radio too! I love it..

I did the other R15 mod that makes it out-of-band *receive* only.
This was after I once dropped the radio and saw it key up briefly on
top of NOAA weather. Out-of-band Tx is too much responsibility,
especially when you're still learning the ropes of the radio and the
permitted bands. Also consider the risk of loss or theft of the radio
to someone less scrupulous..
> 2. I'm concerned about how quickly the battery runs down.
I wouldn't worry too much about. Too many HT users get all obsessed
with battery life and optimal usage habits. The truth is that if you
use the radio normally, and recharge the battery with a smart charger
when it gets low, there isn't much more you can do to extend either
its capacity or useful life. Whether you wait until the display
blinks or just charge it when you feel like it really won't make much
difference at all.
The only common damaging things I've seen are: gross
overcharging/overheating (usually by "Quick Chargers" with no smarts),
or dissipating entire series-connected packs to 0 volts using
resistors or bulbs. The radio will keep you from going below ~5v,
which is plenty fine for a 7.2v pack. A 12v pack should be charged
sooner, especially if you're transmitting.
> 3. I'm using all the battery saving functions and I'm wondering if
> they really do make a difference.
They do! I've watched the current draw from ther radio both with and
without the Rx saver, and the difference is significant.
I usually use the "ABS" setting, which polls the signal less and less
frequently as it remains inactive. If the frequency has been quiet
for a long time, I usually miss the first few syllables, but the
battery lasts much, much longer.
I don't use the Tx saver, because in fringe areas it drops the
repeater between words when it turns down the output power. Also, it
uses the received signal strength to determine the transmit power.
This isn't a good metric, since I often receive repeaters very well
while I can't reach them.
> 4. Are there any cheap alternatives to buying Yaesu
> batteries/chargers for the FT-530?
Yes. Both Periphix and W&W Associates make 7.2v and 12v batteries for
the radio for less $$$ than Yaesu.
I bought a 12v 800mah ($49) from W&W with their Master Charger I
($89), and I'm very pleased with both. The charger is a smart Delta-V
charger based on the Philips TEA1100 charger IC. They're in New York
at 1-800-221-0732. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the 7.2v
1500mah for $49 instead of the 12v.
I haven't bought from Periphix since their prices are a little higher,
and they don't make their own charger. I think they resell Yaseu's,
so the price is high.
> 5. What kind of antenna can I replace the standard one with to
> improve my transmit (instead of increasing wattage)?
I haven't tried any others, but I hear the AEA Hot-Rod works well.
Ask around and maybe borrow a friend's to try it.
Enjoy!

Subject: ADVICE on NEW HF rig wanted
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Hi,
I have been out of the HF rig buying scene for about 10 years, since
I have never had any reason to update my ageing FT301D. However in view
of the VAST differences between UK and US pricing, I think it`s time to
make the change.
Does anyone have any recommendations/reviews on the more popular HF
rigs, I particularly like the look of the TS-50, primarily as I like
to do HF mobile work. A friend also said the Ts850 or 450 were 'good'.
Since I am not a code operator some of the bells and whistles may not
be applicable.
I realise that this is a vast subject but am primarily I guess looking
for personal experiences, reliablity is also a prime concern as I will
be taking it back to the UK soon.
Thanks
Robin

As someone already stated, the Ah rating of Alkalines is a bit elusive
since their ratings are based on discharge levels different from
nickel-cadmium and Gel-Cells. The last information I saw from Duracell
indicated that AA cells were rated at 2.4Ah and D cells at 14Ah.
Remember again that to get all of the energy from Alkaline cells, you
discharge them to about .7 V per cell (again, depending on the discharge
rate). I have not experienced any problems with alkalines in HT's,
although there may be some reduced output due to the voltage depression
during high power transmit. Maximum current output of Alkaline cells is
usually a bit less than 2 times their rated capacity. You will have
depressed voltages at this rate and some self heating.
For emergency use, you can't beat Alkaline cells for adaptability,
availability, energy density and shelf life. In daily routine use, they
can cost you a fortune compared to rechargeables.
I have some discharge curves on Duracell cells and will drop then in the
mail if you wish. Drop me a note with your address.

Ken Jeffcoat

Subject: IC765 Keyer Mod?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Is there a simple mod to convert the internal CW keyer in an IC765 to
eliminate the "trailing dot problem"? I think this is the difference
between the Curtis Type A and Type B keyers.
I'm using an external keyer since I can't tolerate the way it works now
when using a dual lever paddle in the "iambic" mode.

Subject: TENTEC SCOUT Power Supply Problem
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I recently bought a model 938 power supply from tentec for my Scout - they
claimed that the 938, a switching power supply, would work with the rig.
Problem: WHen I key down all of the 50watts, the power supply can't deliver
the adequate, er . . . power. The rig works fine on my old Pryamid 10 amp
supply. I've gotten 2 938s from TenTec and they both perform similiarly.
What am I missing? SWR is fine - my station has been annoying the neighbors
for the last ten months with great results (actually, the neighbors don't
know I exist) I have used the antennas with my QRP equipment with great
(That's a qualified great in light of the sunspot cycle).
I like the scout - 50 watts is more than enough kick for these days of
lesser propagation . . .
Any Ideas?

Here is a loaded
question, but if you were to buy a new TNC to-day (given all that on air
experience that you have gained since) which manufacturer and model would
you get? I am looking for the best combination of price and
performance.
Thanks in advance
